Did You See Heaven Dancing?

In about a split second, we dropped our rakes and trimmers and started throwing pillows, blankets, snacks, a cast iron skillet for eggs, and the French press for coffee into our miniature camper. Jeff and I had been working in our yard that Friday night, but the night skies were about to put on a Level 5 geomagnetic storm. It would be the first to hit Earth since October 2003.  It was an event so big that those living as far south as Kansas and beyond would get a shot at it, and we did not want to miss it.  So we drove out to the country away from the earthly lights, hoping to see the heavens illuminate. Until then, I’d never been at the right place at the right time. I’d only heard of the Aurora Borealis, mostly from our son, who is fortunate to see them often as a resident of Montana.

We drove through the pasture and parked our little “tuna can” of a camper to set up camp. The skies were clear and still, void of the 40 mph wind gusts normal for our area. We were welcomed by the trill of red wing blackbirds and the aroma of new Bluestem surging with growth after the spring burn.  It was heavenly. But then again not quite perfect, the pungent odor of a freshly laid “green steamer” wafted up from under our camper.  I could only place blame on the old bull grazing nearby in the meadow. Thankfully, the shovel Jeff had brought worked well as a giant pooper scooper. 

Settling in, we looked up and waited as the skies dimmed and our campfire glowed.  A shadow, a darker streak from the north, was in the sky.  Could that be it?” we wondered.  It was hard to discern and easy to miss. Had we not known about the forecast, we may have dismissed the shadow all together. We raised our phones to the sky and what we couldn’t see with the naked eye came into glorious view through its lens. We didn’t need special cameras to see it; we already had what we needed right in our hands.

When we held the lens to the sky, to the forecasted event, we could see the glory of the heavens dancing. Yes, it was merely increased solar activity causing the auroras to dance around the poles, but why? And why with such beauty? There were “swirling rivers” and pillars of light pulsating with brilliant colors shimmering, and dancing in the dark sky.  Did you get to see it? There were so many of us around the world with our eyes turned toward heaven that Friday night, and we were probably dancing ourselves – unaware that it was dancing as we were spinning around, looking up to get a better glimpse of the show.

When the aurora borealis were showing off, I thought of my loved ones in heaven, singing and dancing joyfully in unison.  Our physical eyes can’t see it, but it IS happening. How much do we miss with our naked eye, from our earthly view, in our human state?  Heaven is near and real and dancing. Do you have a loved one with Jesus? Can you imagine your mom, your dad, your child, your spouse, your sibling, your grandparents, your friend, and so many others…from every tribe and nation…dancing with all of their might before the Lord. That night, were they dancing and singing with everything they had in hopes that the earth would wake up? Romans 8:19 says, “For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.” Holding the scriptures up as a lens into eternity allows us to see with a bit more clarity. It is a beautiful mystery but we are not completely blind. “For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.” Romans 1:20

However, that Friday night in May, a lot was going on. It’s a hectic season for many of us, with parties, graduations, and life. Many people didn’t get to see the show. Maybe they didn’t know about it or had to work and be inside. Perhaps they didn’t understand how they could view it or weren’t interested, but it was still happening. It was still true. 

The veil between heaven and earth is so thin! But as our daily lives get busy and complicated, the haze and murkiness can make the veil feel more like a concrete barrier. It can seem as if all that heaven and hell stuff is far away or isn’t real. And like the Northern Lights, whether you were aware of them or not, it didn’t change the fact that they were very real, very close, and right above your head.

You have everything you need to read about the forecasted event of all time. That phone in your hand has more than a lens; it can connect you to the Holy Scriptures, showing you the Way. Jesus, part of the triune God, your Creator, already came to earth as a man to live and die so that we would have a present and a future with Him. Your eternity with Him is a gift. He has made a way. Will you accept it? Whether you choose to pay attention or not, the event is happening, and you don’t want to miss it. Are you ready for what’s next, whether it is your end date or the glorious appearance of Christ? It’s been forecasted, go get your “lens” and take a look for yourself.
