A Prayer for When You Are in It Deep

Heavenly Father, Maker of heaven and earth, sovereign King. We come with humble hearts, seeking to trust You. We need your help. Thank you for being our Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all of our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the same comfort we receive from you. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

God, sometimes our feelings magnify circumstances, making them seem more real than the truth. When life has buried us in heartache and disappointment, we can feel alone and unseen, like a seed in the ground waiting for someone to move on our behalf. In this time, please quiet our hearts and help us find beauty in the low-lying places. Grant us peace when we can’t see past today. Help us see Your hand in our lives when life feels small or uncertain. Lord, even in this dirt, let us sprout and grow roots that are deep and strong.

Jesus, In creation, you show us that some things are meant to grow slowly yet with great purpose. As we allow your healing, help us to be more like a mighty oak and less like a willow tossed back and forth by the winds of change. And when we’ve grown give us the courage to extend ourselves to comfort those from the scorching heat, to expand our canopies to cradle a feathered nest, or extend our boughs to become a shelter for those who feel left out. Let us testify that healing and hope come from you, our Creator. You are the Rock of Salvation, the Living Water, and the Bread of Life. May we thirst and hunger for you alone.  In Jesus name, Amen

  1. How these prayers resonate…what a gift God has given you Ann. You have given language to the deep emotion and reminded us where to seek truth. You have been comforting shade for me. A gift from God!

    1. Thank you, Julie. I did not realize God’s until it was squeezed out of me through necessity. You know, as well as I, that we uncover more and more about ourselves (the good and the bad) in this kind of loss. I am so thankful God brought us together, though it is not in the way we would have chosen. Love you.
